Find a company’s Legal Entity Identifier and check its registered identity using GLEIF reference data. Search by company name or a 20-character LEI. No account required.
Source: GLEIF API. LEI reference data is provided under GLEIF’s CC0 data terms. Availability and accuracy depend on the source. This tool does not register or renew LEIs.
What is an LEI?
A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character code that identifies a legal entity participating in financial transactions. It helps distinguish companies with similar names. The associated reference record can include a legal name, jurisdiction, registered address and registration dates.
How to use an LEI search in due diligence
Compare the legal name, jurisdiction and registration identifier with the documents supplied by your customer or vendor. Check both the entity status and the LEI registration status. Then screen the identified company and any relevant related parties under your own review process.
Identity data and sanctions screening answer different questions
An LEI identifies a legal entity. It does not certify that the company is free of sanctions, establish every beneficial owner or authorize a transaction. GLEIF parent relationships, where available, describe accounting consolidation and may have reporting exceptions.
LEI lookup: common questions
Can I search by company name without knowing its LEI?
Yes. Enter at least three characters of the legal name. Results come from GLEIF’s legal-name search and are limited to 10 records per request. Refine the name if there are more results. An empty result does not prove that a company has no LEI.
What does a lapsed LEI mean?
LAPSED describes the renewal status of the LEI registration. It does not, by itself, mean that the legal entity has closed. Read the entity status separately and confirm important facts with the relevant registry.
Does this lookup show beneficial owners?
No. This tool displays identity and registration data. GLEIF’s own record can provide accounting-parent relationships or reporting exceptions. Those are not a complete beneficial-ownership investigation or an OFAC ownership determination.
Where does the information come from?
Results are requested from the public GLEIF API when you search. Each result shows the source record’s last update and our retrieval time. GLEIF makes LEI reference data available under CC0. SanctionsKit is independent of GLEIF.
