Format source: Swift IBAN Registry, release 103 (2026-09), checked 2026-10-21. 89 registered country formats. This is an independent format checker.

What is an IBAN?

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. It starts with a two-letter country code and two check digits, followed by the national bank account format. Countries use different lengths and structures, up to a maximum of 34 characters.

What this IBAN validator checks

The checker removes spacing, accepts lowercase letters, checks the registered country structure and length, then calculates the MOD 97 checksum. It does not test domestic account check digits, contact a bank, verify the account exists or identify its owner.

Before paying a customer or supplier

A correctly formatted IBAN can still belong to the wrong payee. Confirm payment instructions through a trusted channel. Separately identify and screen the payee and relevant related parties under your sanctions-review process. An IBAN cannot supply the payee’s legal identity for you.

IBAN checker: common questions

Is a valid IBAN proof that an account exists?

No. A format and checksum result is a mathematical check. It does not confirm the account is open, belongs to the intended recipient or can receive a payment.

Do you store or send my IBAN?

This checker performs the calculation in your browser. The entered value is not put in a URL, sent to our server, stored in browser storage or included in analytics.

Does this check the bank’s BIC or SWIFT code?

No. This tool validates the registered IBAN format. Obtain bank routing details and account confirmation from the bank or a trusted payment provider.

Can an IBAN check detect sanctions?

No. Sanctions screening needs the identity of the payee and other relevant parties, plus appropriate sources and review. It is separate from validating an account-number format.
