Why is an IMO number useful in a vessel sanctions search?
A vessel’s name or flag can change. Where an official record provides an IMO number, it helps you compare the vessel across those changes. Check the number against the original record and review any other available identifiers and dates.
Does checking a vessel also check its owner and operator?
No. A vessel, its owner and its operator are different subjects. Review each party required by your policy, along with ownership, cargo, destination and other facts relevant to the voyage. A vessel name search cannot answer all of those questions.
